VICTOR POPOV
In the sculptural work of Victor Popov one experiences an atmosphere that refers to the
presence of the unseen or unspeakable. Actually a paradox
of three-dimensional art. His sculptures and assemblages come from a
A world of forms and themes that reflects the striving for immateriality
an absolutely pure, geometric abstraction freed from personal emotions
based and today generally under the terms "constructivism" or "suprematism",
a painting style derived from Cubism by Kasimir Malevich in 1913.
The constructivists supported a geometric-technical design principle
Color areas, lines and basic geometric shapes. Their main representatives were artists
and female artists of the so-called Russian avant-garde. So today will be one
artistic epoch in Russia, which took place between about 1905 and 1934,
and a fundamental process of change in all areas of Russian art
of the traditional convention to international modernity.
Victor Popov is very aware of these artistic traditions. 1952 in East
Born in Kazakhstan, he studied painting at the Institute of Applied Arts in Lvov, formerly
known as "Lviv", in what is now western Ukraine. After graduation began his
way as a freelance artist. First stations in Novosibirsk followed, where Popov
also came into contact with the material wood for the first time and took first steps over the
painting, followed by a stay of several years in Leningrad, the
today's Saint Petersburg. After these eventful years, Popov settled in 1991
Germany and settles in Düsseldorf, where he lives and works today.
In the sculptural work of Victor Popov there is a redefinition of the past
recognizable. The artist does not stick to tradition, but accentuates his own
creative roots in that in his free-standing sculptures e.g
there is always something picturesque present. Impressively strong and precise in expression and form
balanced, they unfold their immense effect.
In his assemblages, on the other hand, Popov uses several that differ in shape and colour
sculptural objects together on a base plate, which are also connected to each other
connect. Shapes like colors of each object communicate, made up of parts
becomes a context, a work of art with a relief-like surface.
To this day, Victor Popov has consistently pursued his individual path towards an abstract one
design. Detached from representational motifs, his sculptural
Works nevertheless partially associations with figurative.
